You like chocolate? Coffee? Cake? Then this treat was made for you! Mokkapalat is the name of this Finnish brownie. It is short, rich, dense, and covered with a strong mocha frosting (well, as strong as you wanna make it). According to statistics, Fins are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world, so a coffee flavoured cake is only fitting!
I had never heard of this recipe until my good friend Tommi from Oulu sent me his mom’s recipe, so thank you Tommi’s mom!
Mokkapalat (Finnish Chocolate and Coffee Brownie)

Ingredients
Brownie
- 150 gr sugar
- 2 eggs
- 200 ml milk
- 200 gr flour
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 110 gr melted butter
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Icing
- 125 gr icing sugar
- 25 gr cocoa powder
- 50 ml coffee
- 35 gr melted butter
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Sprinkles
Instructions
Brownie
- Preheat your oven at 200°C
- In a bowl, beat the sugar and the eggs together.
- In a different bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together (cocoa powder, flour, baking powder)
- Add in batched the dry ingredients and the milk to the egg and sugar mix, starting and finishing with dry ( 1/3 dry ingredients, 1/2 milk, 1/3 dry, 1/2 milk, 1/3 dry).
- Add the melted butter and the vanilla. Mix thouroughly.
- Bake at 200°C for about 15 minutes.
- Leave out to cool completely.
Icing
- Mix all the ingredients together.
- Pour onto the cooled cake (the icing hardens after a while, so keep that in mind while you wait for your brownie to cool down).
- Add sprinkles on top.
- Refrigerate for a few hours (ideally overnight)
