Travelling the world one recipe at a time

Swedish Meatballs

Meatballs are probably the most famous Swedish dish (thanks Ikea). These ones are really simple to make. They are moist and juicy, and the creamy gravy that goes along with it is just delish!

They are usually served with potatoes, either boiled or mashed, and some lingonberry sauce.

Swedish Meatballs

Probably the most famous Swedish dish internationally, these classic meatballs are easy to make, and the creamy gravy sauce that goes with it is to die for!

Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Equipment

  • A large bowl
  • A large pan

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 25 gr breadcrumbs
  • 50 ml milk
  • 10 ml cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 onion
  • 300 gr minced meat (beef or beef+porc)
  • 1/4 tsp all spice mix
  • Salt and pepper

For the sauce

  • 40 gr butter
  • 15 gr flour
  • 320 ml beef broth
  • 130 ml cream
  • 3/4 tsp mustard
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

Meatballs

  • In a big bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the milk and the cream. Wait for a couple of minutes until the breadcrumbs completely absorb the liquid.
  • Mince thinly the onion and the garlic.
  • In the breadcrumbs bowl, add the egg, the onion and the garlic, the meat, the spice mix, salt and pepper. Mix thouroughly (I use my hands, I find it much easier).
  • Make your meatballs. Depending on the size, you could get about 8/10 bigger ones, or about 15 smaller ones (smaller ones are easier to cook through).
  • Put some olive oil and butter in a pan. Cook your meatballs in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan (otherwise too much moisture will be released at once and your meatballs will not brown nicely). Do not cook them on too high heat or they will brown too quickly while the inside is still raw.
  • Put them in a plate and cover them with foil while you prepare the sauce.

Sauce

  • In the same pan with the meat juice, melt the butter.
  • Add the sieved flour, and whisk thoroughly until all incorporated.
  • Add the broth, cream, mustard, salt and pepper.
  • Whisk until it thickens.

Serving

  • You can either put the meatballs back in the pan with the sauce, or serve them and cover them with it.
  • Add some parsley, thym, or herb of your choice on top.
  • Serve with boiled of mashed potatoes. If you can find some, it is traditionally served with a side of lingonberry sauce.
